22. Alma Hansen

BIRTH: This child seems to be listed in the 1900 census as Elmer, son, age 3, and in the 1910 census as Alma, daughter, age 12. The 1900 census gives the birthdate as Oct 1896. The cemetery record below gives Alma's birthdate as Sept 23, 1897. This does differ from the 1900 census, but even though there is "space" for two children, one named Elmer and one named Alma, two such children are not listed in 1900. It is known that Henry had a child named Alma. Therefore, it is presumed that the 1900 census is in error.

MARRIAGE: According to the 1930 census, they were married about 1927.

DEATH: Per SSDI:
NOTE: Alma Olesen, born 23 Sep 1897, died Feb 1997, last residence Audubon, Audubon, IA, last benefit Casselberry, Seminole, FL, issued IA.
NOTE: It is unclear from this record whether she died in IA or FL. She evidently at one time was living in FL where she received benefits.

NOTE: See father's notes for other family burials at same cemetery.

CENSUS:

1920 - Alma is not listed with her parents, and she is apparently not married yet, unless she was married before she married Jens Olesen. She has not been found in the 1920 census as Alma Hansen.

His mother's name was listed in his immigration record as Kristin Olesen. In 1890 there are only 23 entries for the last name Olesen living in Nysogn, Ringkøbing and none seem to be possible entries for her as a married person. But, perhaps she was not married by 1890 and if so, her maiden name is unknown as of 7/2006.

8/29/1918 - Front page lists persons recently drafted by Order # 906, including Thorval C Hansen, Serial number 540 to report for active duty with the Army.

10/24/1918 - The Brayton correspondent reported that: "George Hoegh came from the Great Lakes Naval Training Station last week to attend the funeral of his cousin Torval (sic) Hansen...", and "The remains of Torval (sic) Hansen and Bertel Madsen who died last week at Camp Dodge of pneumonia arrived here Saturday and were taken to their homes northwest of town. Torval Hansen was laid to rest in the Oakhill cemetery and Bertel Madsen at Elkhorn."

6/5/1919 - Front page lists 42 military service deaths in World War I from the Journal's trade area. It does not characterize them all as being combat related, but neither does it include Thorvald Hansen's name, so conceivably it is a listing of deaths occurring overseas, but not necessarily all from combat causes.

LETTER: In a letter to Patricia Hellmers from Anne Christensen DeWitt dated 11 Jun 1973, she stated the following: Her name is Anne Belle Christensen, she was baptized Anna Sophia, but changed her name when she "went to Uni and my Soc Sec and other papers are signed so." Her mother's name was Anine Raun, born 1 Apr 1880, Bisholt, Denmark, married Lauritz Christensen 11 Dec 1908, and that her mother had not been married before. Lauritz came to the US in 1880, entering through New York and that "his wife, Chris, and Annie remained until he earned enough money to send for them." [She mentions Annie, but it is believed she was born in Omaha, not Denmark.] Lauritz spent a short time after his immigration in a lumber camp in Wisconsin. He was not a member of the Presbyterian Church, but attended there. "Carrie had a twin sister who died shortly after birth, Annie was 21 and in college when she died, then there was Chris, besides these there were six other children who died, nine children by this marriage." Karen Christensen changed her name to Carrie because as I "she didn't like her name."
NOTE: See Lauritz Christensen for other information about him from this letter.

ALLIANCE KIWANIS CLUB, 2003, Projects:
Club members Larry Yeager, Ted Bohlen, Howard DeWitt, Don Sjostrom, Jim Parks, Todd Heldenbrandt, Terry Padden and Gordon Hoff have been busy building a 8'x12' children's playhouse that will be raffled off just before Christmas. The lucky winner will get a structure that has an 8'x8' interior space that is insulated, drywalled and painted. The building also has a 4x'8' covered porch with a vinyl fence railing. The exterior of the playhouse is covered with vinyl siding. Club members will be selling the $5.00 tickets for the raffle and the drawing will be held on December 20th. Wouldn't this make a wonderful gift for a child's Christmas.
