Return Visit to Denmark Lauritz Christensen traveled across the Atlantic Ocean in 1914 to visit his home in Denmark, where his elderly mother was going blind. When he returned to America, he was registered with the immigration authorities. The document below shows his name and the data that was recorded about him (see the last name on the list). The page below indicates "1913," but this is incorrect; other pages show 1914, which was correct. (A larger jpg image can be viewed here.) |

The SS Oceanic was built by
Harlan & Wolff Limited, Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1899 for the White
Star and Dominion Lines. Statistics: 17,272 gross tons; 704 (bp) feet long;
63 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engines, twin screw. Service speed
19 knots. 1,710 passengers (410 first class, 300 second class, 1,000 third
class). The Oceanic was used on the Liverpool-New York service. World’s
largest liner, 1899-1901. Converted to wartime Auxiliary Cruiser. Stranded
in the Shetlands, 9/1914. Gradually scrapped on the spot in 1924. |
