IMMIGRATION:
Seamen's records from Bremen indicate that Hinrich Hellmers first came to New Orleans some time in early 1847. (The ship he was on, the Leontine, left Bremen about 2 December 1846.) It appears that Hinrich later considered this to be the date when first lived in New Orleans. A naturalization certificate for a "Henry Helms" dated 18 Feb 1864, indicates that he "arrived here in 1847 under 18 years of age." (In early 1847, Hinrich would have been 18 years old.) His obituary noted that he had been "a citizen of this city for the last twenty-four years." This would indicate that he came to New Orleans in about 1848. Hinrich apparently did not work out of Bremen as a seaman from December 1846 to November 1850. He may have been living in New Orleans during some of this time.
