Note: Information on the parents and siblings of Franz Xaver Betzler is available in a "Familienregister," see H-CHO-0001. The family name in Germany was spelled "Bezler." The record shows that two of Xaver's older siblings, a sister, M. Barbara, and a brother, Joseph, were also "in Amerika" by 1854. Their whereabouts are unknown. RESIDENCE:
Note: Family tradition, as documented by L. H. Hellmers, indicates that the Betzler family may have lived in Mississippi for some time. This is verified by the marriage and death records of the younger daughter, Julianna, which indicates that she was born in Mississippi. No additional evidence of this has been found. There is also a tradition that there may have been a son born to this family, but there is no available evidence. If there was a son, he presumably would have died young.

RESIDENCE: A letter dated 13 Nov 1996 was received from the Harrison County Library System, Biloxi Public Library, Biloxi, MS, stating that they checked the following records but did not find any reference to Franz Xaver Betzler or any of his family members or any spelling similar to Betzler: Harrison County marriage records, county wills, cemetery records, federal census records. They stated they have no indexed newspaper prior to 1888 and no city directories earlier than 1905.

DEATH: Died by the time of the 1860 census, when his wife Sophie was a widow. He presumably died in Louisiana, perhaps in Jefferson Parish or Orleans Parish.

IMMIGRATION: The Lange family apparently traveled together from their home in the Duchy of Braunschweig to New Orleans, with the exception of daughter Louise, who emigrated in 1854 with her husband and his three children from a former marriage. An emigration record shows that they left about January 1852. (See emigration record below.) According to Sophie Lange Geeck's 1887 death certificate, she was a resident for 35 years, calculating to an arrival in 1852. The earliest date would have been in January 1852 and the latest, 10 April 1853, when Wilhelm Lange was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in New Orleans.
