(2) Civil marriage record (license, return); 1807-1976; St Clair County, Belleville IL; 1 Nov 1905; Illinois Regional Archives Depository, Carbondale IL.PHOTOGRAPH: Irma (Landwehr) Doerries was interviewed Jan 1982 and asked about a Neff family photograph taken in 1906. She was asked for her recollections regarding the "mystery couple" in the photograph. She stated that the woman was a niece of Philipp Neff and their names were Julia and Wilbert Crossmyer of St. Louis, Missouri. She stated that they had been to New Orleans several times and that they were thought of as an "elegant" couple. She also said that Wilbert liked a special kind of beer and the family made sure it was available for their visits. She had no idea if there was any special occasion that took place at the time of the photograph. (Julia appears to be wearing a corsage.) [Notes from this interview were transcribed here and the notes not retained.]
TELEPHONE INTERVIEW: Telephone interview dated __ Jan 1982, conducted by Norman Hellmers, interview with Clara J. Crossmyer of Farmington Hills, Michigan, 1-313-478-7913. Notes from telephone call:
Clara is the daughter of Elmer R. Crossmyer. Her mother (maiden name "Shay") died 1946, her father died in 1953. Wilbert Crossmyer was her uncle. Regarding Wilbert's wife, she said: "Was her name Julia?" She did not know when or where Wilbert and Julia were married. Julia was (in her words) a "madam." She assumes Wilbert met Julia at the barroom which William Crossmyer bought for his son Andrew (Andy). Andrew had a drinking problem. The family thought that he would drink less if he worked in a bar. Apparently it didn't work. Wilbert and Julia moved to Torrance, California. They had "two homes." Her mother corresponded with Julia until at least about 1933. Clara does not know when Julia died. Wilbert was seriously ill (gangrene; lost a leg). He later married his nurse. Wilbert Crossmyer had no children by either marriage. Clara Crossmyer had information on her grandfather and his two wives: Caroline _____ and Josephine White. [This information has been incorporated on a Crossmyer family sheet.] William M. J. Crossmyer may have been from "Belfont, Pennsylvania." She had never seen Wilbert or Julia. She had seen a photograph of Wilbert. She said he was tall and knew he wore a moustache. She had not seen any photographs of Julia. She said her father would say that "she was a handsome woman." Clara said that the Crossmyers always said they were very happy in California. Of Julia, she said: "She cared a great deal for my uncle." She did not know Wilbert's occupation, but said: "He may have been a bartender."DEATH: Civil death record; 1929; Vital Statistics, Department of Public Health, CA; no 6193, 29 May 1929; Registrar-Recorder, Los Angeles County, CA.

She married second Wilbert Edgar Crossmyer, who had lived in St. Louis from at least 1887. This couple apparently visited Julia's uncle Philipp Neff several times in New Orleans, Louisiana. During one visit in about 1906, they were included in a Neff family photograph. The couple moved to Torrance, California, about 1907, where both died.

[Notes from the above letter transcribed and letter not retained.]LETTER: Letter dated 31 Jan 1982 from Norman Hellmers to Miss Lillian Hubbell, researcher, St. Louis, MO, regarding her research there on the Crossmyer families and her assistance in learning that some of the Crossmyer families moved to Detroit, Michigan, he stated:
The Detroit connection proved to be most important. I telephoned Clara J. Crossmyer of Detroit area and obtained some more cludes. Miss Crossmyer was very cooperative. She was able to give me the following information:
Her father was Elmer R. Crossmyer. Her uncle, Wilbert, had indeed married a woman named Julia, but she did not know when or where, or what Julia's maiden name was. Apparently after 1907, Wilbert and Julia Crossmyer moved to Torrance, California. There were no children. Julia died while in California, date not known. Later Wilbert was seriously ill (gangrene, leg removed). He eventually married his nurse. Wilbert died not long after 1953. [Information from the above letter transcribed and the letter not retained.]DEATH: Civil death record; 1952; Department of Public Health, CA; no 52-019044, 7 Feb 1952; State Registrar of Vital Statistics, Sacramento CA.

TELEPHONE INTERVIEW: Notes on telephone interview dated 20 May 1983, Norman Hellmers interviewed Russel Villhard, Belleville, IL (618) 234-6739. Mr. Villhard was friendly and cooperative, but had no special interest in family history. (He had apparently been called by Norma True about a week earlier.) Russel Villhard is the son of Albert Villhard, and the grandson of Adam (Neff) Villhard. Mr. Villhard is married but has no children. His sister, Viola married Adolph Kensing. They had six daughters, of which one died. The other five are all single. Russel Villhard's mother may have been Estelle Krost. His father later remarried, Leona Wollenhaupt. From this second marriage there was one son, John Villhard, of Collinsville, Illinois. John's wife may be Janet. (This is apparently the John Villhard that Norman Hellmers had contacted earlier.] The Villhard's in the Belleville phone directory are:
Albert - This was Russel Villhard's father, now deceased. His step-mother uses this name.
Arthur R. - This is a son of Leroy Villhard, a son of Willian Villhard, Sr. (There were two other sons, William Jr. and Giles; also a daughter. All of the sons are deceased.)
Russel - The person being called for the interview
Wm. Jr. - Son of William Villhard, Sr., now deceased.
Norman Hellmers told Russel Villhard that he (Mr. Hellmers) would send him copies of the photographs of his father's and grandfather's families. [Notes from this telephone interview transcribed above and copy not retained.]DEATH:

FAMILY: Email exchange between Allyson Tilton
, address 3601 Canterbury Ct., Waterloo, IA and Norman Hellmers who had found her family information on Ancestry.com regarding Elizabeth Schmidt of St. Clair County, Illinois who married William Villhard. Allyson replied in response:
All I knew about Elizabeth was that she had married William Villhard, and then that by the time of her siblings' death in 1934, she was not mentioned in the obit with the other surviving siblings, so I assumed she was deceased. Do you know if she and William had children? I was not aware that she was in Walnut Hill Cemetery - I had been looking for them in the Summerfield area, and not in Belleville. Two of Elizabeth's siblings, George and Hester, both indicate on marriage and death records that they were born in LeSuere, Minn., so I believe Elizabeth to be born there also (she is born between the two). However, her younger brother, Christian Schmidt (named for their father) was born in Wisconsin (place unknown), and the family traveled a bit because their father was a painter. [She included information about the siblings of Elizabeth Schmidt, but that information was not transcribed here. The printout of the email was not retained.]
