Das Artland

Heinrich Landwehr's younger brother Gerhard remained in Germany, marrying Katharine Korfhage. They had five children, the oldest of whom was named Dietrich, born 9 October 1877.

Dietrich obviously loved the beauty of the area in which he lived. He wrote a poem about it, which he simply called "Das Artland."

Poem, Das Artland.

This artistic and sensitive young man served in the German army in World War I. While fighting in France, he was killed on 1 May 1915 at a place known as Priesterwald. A World War I memorial in Badbergen includes his name: "D. Landwehr, 1.5.15, in Priesterwald."
