Sources

Genealogical relationships and data on individuals must be supported by evidence, which is provided by a variety of sources. These sources include church and civil records of births, marriages, and deaths, cemetery records, obituaries, censuses, city directories, ship passenger lists, and similar records.

On this website, many of these sources are included in the "Notes" within the ancestor and descendant pages. The notes also include information on where the original record can be found, such as a library or archives. Many of the sources have been identified with a unique number, which can be found after the source or at the bottom of that individual's notes. Some of the sources have been saved as scans or transcriptions of the original records. These sources have generally been placed into one of the categories in the table below.

Some of these types of records have not yet been used for the Hellmers family. Where they have been used, click on the appropriate category to find the exact record that was referenced in the notes. For example, a record might be identified as H-CVB-0009. The "H" means that this is a Hellmers family record. The three letters refer to the type of record, in this case "CVB" refers to a Civil Birth record, and the number is an arbitrary number given to each individual record. To find this record, click on CVB below and find the record identified as hcvb0009. In some cases, there are multiple files with the same number, identifed as a,b,c, etc.

It is intended that in time, all of these Hellmers sources will be made available online. Some of these files have not been compressed for the Web and are very large in size and could take a while to download. The records are in a variety of formats, including jpg, gif, pdf, and doc sid files. You are welcome to download and save any of these files for your own use.

Many of the records from St. Paul Lutheran Church have not been identified with an "H" number. These records can be looked up here:
