Postcard received in New Orleans on June 29, 1964

Dear Len,                                      6-27-64
Actually the river doesn't live up to the name some
have given it, i.e., America's Sewer. While it is very
silty, I have seen no traces of garbage or sewage.
Of course we use it as our john, or nautically, our
head—and having this knowledge, I may never
drink the water in N. O. again. Some people expect
to see a roaring, treacherous, giant of a river,
but as yet, it has only been half that bad. The
river provides a unique method of studying the
U. S.'s commerce. We've also been able to learn
a lot about human behavior—mainly people are
the same every where. Also, all the river experts
disagree, and none of them are right.  See ya, Norm
