Civil Death Records


In the19th century, New Orleans was one of the largest cities in the United States. As such, it had a sophisticated system of recording vital records, including births, marriages, and deaths. Fortunately for historians and genealogists, many of these records have been preserved. The death records begin in 1804, but only a limited numbers of deaths were recorded until the 1830s.

The 19th-century Orleans Parish civil death records were generally recorded on preprinted forms that were in bound volumes. There were two forms per page, each of which measured 16 inches by 10 inches, so each record was approximately 8 inches by 10 inches. An example of a 19th-century death record can be seen here.

In Louisiana, death records are private for 50 years. Death records for the last 50 years can be ordered from the State Registrar, Vital Records and Statistics:
