Karen Ann Altmann Meyers
I thought when I was a senior that my whole life was mapped
out for me. Little did I know at the ripe old age of 17 what was yet to come. I
married Richie Meyers in my senior year, and we had two children: a girl,
Catherine in 1962 and a boy, Ricky in 1963. We moved to Slidell after Richie was
discharged from the service, built a home on six acres of land, had horses,
dog, cats, etc. I went back to college and got my BA and MEd from UNO.
My father passed away in 1981, Richie in 1987, his dad in
1989, my son in 1999, and my mom in 2002. I taught school for 24 years and
retired in 2001. My choices were to retire, have a heart attack, or wind up in
jail for harming one of the darling children I was teaching. Needless to say, I
chose retirement. Lucky me had a heart attack two months later. Oh well!!!
I have a log cabin in Colorado, which became my refuge every
summer, and Christmas and New Year’s. It is still the place where I get back in
touch with reality. George Daigle and I reconnected in 2002 and have been
together ever since that time. It still amazes me how much we had in common
during our school days and still have in common today.
We lost our Rottweiler of 12 years, Princess, and
decided to get another puppy. This time we got a Cane Corso Mastiff, Lady
Maddelena (“Maddie”), who is the apple of our eye. She is our child—all 125
pounds of her. She makes us laugh and keeps us on our toes.
