BIOGRAPHY
Betty Jean Miller Burroughs

I went to Southeastern Louisiana University as music major after I graduated Nicholls, but I did not graduate from SLU at that time. I then worked for Boeing at Michoud for over a year. I had met Thomas Burroughs while at SLU. We married in September 1966. Tom had joined the Air Force after two years of college and was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi, his entire time in service in the Keesler Air Force Band. I worked for the U.S. Navy Seabees in Gulfport while we lived in Biloxi.

After Tom completed his service time in November 1968, we returned to Hammond, Louisiana, so that he could complete his Music Education degree. Our only child, Stephanie, was born in 1969. I was a stay-at-home mom for three years until I began work as a teacher's assistant at the Montessori School that Stephanie was attending. I worked there for three years. Since Stephanie was in parochial school, I needed to find a full-time position to aid in the expenses. I landed a job at Southeastern's Sims Memorial Library and have been here ever since. We lived in Hammond until 1977, then we moved to Denham Springs, Louisiana. I did take a one year hiatus from SLU and worked at a music store in Baton Rouge, but the opportunity presented itself for me to return to SLU and I did.

We separated in 1985 and divorced in 1990. I had moved back to Hammond and decided to complete my college education. I no longer wanted to teach music, so I completed a Liberal Arts curriculum and finally graduated SLU in December 1987. It only took me 26 years!!!!!!!!!! I had been renting a house in Hammond for 15 years. In 2000, I was finally able to buy a small house on three acres of land 5 miles outside of Hammond in the "village" of Tickfaw. I share my home with my twelve-year-old yellow lab, Sugar.

I was a supervisor in the Cataloging Department of the library for about 14 years. The library director then asked me to become the Head of the Circulation/Reserves Department. I have been in that position since 1993. I will probably retire in about a year.

My daughter Stephanie currently teaches at Denham Springs High and has taught at several different schools during her career. She has also been the flag corps instructor for several different schools in Louisiana and a drum corps in Wyoming. She now works exclusively with the Denham Springs High flag corps. She shares her home with Duke--my canine "grandson."
