Nicholls after Hurricane Katrina


On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans and surrounding areas. The stormand the flooding that followedcaused catastrophic damage to the city's Ninth Ward. The building that once housed Francis T. Nicholls High School (later renamed Frederick Douglass High School) was severely damaged. In 2006, classmate Al Ohm returned to the old neighborhood and took a number of photographs.

The Alvar Street Branch of the New Orleans Public Library. The WWI Ninth Ward Victory Arch, located on Burgundy Street. What had once been Savoy's ice cream parlor, catty-corner from Nicholls at St. Claude and Pauline. The building at the far right housed Huerstel's Bar and Restaurant at the corner of St. Claude and Independence.
