This was our Nicholls class ring. The one
pictured here was a boy’s ring. The girls’ rings were smaller, but otherwise
the same. They were 10K gold and featured a gold “N” atop a blue stone.
“Rebels” appeared on each side on a white inlay. The year was split between
the sides. We had our initials engraved on the inside. Rings were ordered in our junior
year and presented early in our senior year. Many of us paid in installments
because they were expensive at $35. (Did boys and girls pay the same price
for their rings?)
With our year of 1961, it was hard to tell which was the “19” and which
was the “61.” As MAD Magazine pointed out on its cover for the March 1961
issue, this was the first "upside-up" year—that is, one in which the
numerals that form the year look the same as when the numerals are rotated
upside down—since 1881, and the last until 6009.
