NICHOLLS CLASS OF 1961
Francis T. Nicholls High School
New Orleans, Louisiana

Nicholls Band

Year after year, the band was the largest student organization at F. T. Nicholls High School, with around 100 participants. The band would "march" the student body into the auditorium for all-school assemblies, play for every football game (including a different half-time show each week), accompany musicals, participate in numerous Mardi Gras parades, and play for graduation.

Band members wore a distinctive uniform, reminiscent of Confederate Civil War uniforms: white pants or skirt and black shoes, a light gray shirt with a blue tie, topped by a gray "Eisenhower" jacket. The hat was styled after a Confederate cap, known as a "kepi."

The band was led by student officers: Captain, First and Second Lieutenants, and Senior and Junior Warrant Officers. The marching band was led by a First and Second Drum Major. The officers wore insignia on their uniforms to denote their positions: Captain, two linked gold bars; First Lieutenant, one gold bar; Second Lieutenant, one silver bar.

Distinctive to the Nicholls Band were twelve Flagbearers, usually taller girls who were selected to carry a variety of flags, including the United States flag, the Confederate battle flag, the flag of Louisiana, and the Nicholls High School flag.
