Notes on Roat Family Photographs

Thankfully for the history of our Roat family, quite a few photographs have been preserved. An old album contained numerous photographs of the Roat and Thomas ancestors and relatives and other loose photographs documented some of the family's activities, including their journey to California in1920-1921.

For each photograph, a separate webpage documents the following:

Identification: In most cases, the Roats can be accurately identified, but often other relatives in the photos cannot be. Corrections or suggestions on these identifications are always welcome.

Notes: Additional data is given when available, including information written on the backs of photos.

Date: Occasionally, dates were written on the backs of the photos. More often than not, dates have been estimated. These are indicated with "ca" [circa], meaning "about." These estimates are based on the approximate ages of those pictured and other factors. For example, an early photo of the four oldest Roat girls is only marked "Beach Street." The date can be narrowed down knowing that the Roats only lived at 1121 Beach Street in Flint in about 1913-1914. Some photos are indicated as "Undated" when an estimate is impractical.

Repository: When known, the current location of the original is given. A number of the ancestor photos are slide or color print copies of the originals.

Size of original: The size of the original, when available, is given in inches..

Number: Each photo has been given a distinct number, such as R-PHO-0001. The "R" stands for Roat and "PHO" for photograph.

Retrieve: The image at the top of each page is a compressed image, which appears fine on a computer monitor, but is not suitable for printing. To examine a picture more closely or to download a file suitable for printing, you can retrieve a larger jpg file of each image. The original scans are also available, however these are large files. These tif files are here: tifs

Suggestions for corrections and improvements are always welcome.
