| Some time in
1920, the Roat family decided to temporarily leave Flint and journey to
California, where father Jesse Roat could find work outdoors to improve
his health. They set out in August 1920 in a Dodge touring car. After a
2,300-mile camping trip, they arrived in Huntington Park, California, where
they purchased three lots. On these, Jess helped build two houses (one of
which they sold). He also worked for the A&P Construction Company. Because of a temporary illness, Eleanor stayed behind with Kate's mother, Nellie Thomas in Bay View. In December 1920, Nellie and Eleanor traveled to California by train to join the family. Also in December, Jess's parents, Levi and Fanny Roat came to visit (perhaps accompanied by a couple from Davison, Michigan, the Uptegraffs). While in California, Marguerite graduated from high school and Katharine graduated from 8th grade. Apparently in early 1921, Nellie and Eleanor returned to Michigan by train. In July and August 1921, the rest of the Roat family made their way home, making stops in Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City. Some time in August 1921, they were back home in Flint. A few surviving photographs document their travels and their one-year stay in the Golden State. |
