Identification:
Julius von Wittke (1829-1873). Notes: Written on the back of the photo [see below] is: "Julius von Wittke New York U S Amerika Webster Place." (Julius von Wittke never lived on Webster Place in Brooklyn, New York, but his widow did, from about 1880 until her death in 1893.) This is the only known image of Julius von Wittke. Von Wittke is wearing his Union Army uniform. The hat shows the insignia of the U. S. Cavalry (crossed sabers), but his rank in the photograph has not been determined . He served as a First Lieutenant in 1861, and was promoted to Captain in 1862. Date: circa 1861-1863, the dates of von Wittke's military service in the Union Army during the Civil War.
