Identification:
Juliane (Tullius) vonWittke (1831-1893). The child she is holding is
presumably her daughter Juliane. Notes: This is the only known image of Juliane (Tullius) von Wittke. A handwritten note on the back of the framed photograph indicated it was "Julia von Wittke." A photographer's mark on the reverse says: "Photographic Artist Ph. Rupp. 13 Avenue A New York." The photograph was taken in New York City, near where the von Wittkes were living in 1863. (New York city directories in the early 1860s show Philipp Rupp, photographer, at 13 Avenue A. He was apparently not there after 1866.) In late 1863, the mother, Juliane (Tullius) von Wittke, was nearly 33 years old. In the photograph, the mother appears to be in her mid-30s. The original carte-de-visite-sized photograph was cut down to fit in a small frame. Date: circa late 1863; based on the estimated age of her child, Juliane von Wittke, who was born 8 August 1863. Repository: Concordia Historical Institute, St. Louis, Missouri. Size of original: Carte-de-visite format; card trimmed to 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches. Number: W-PHO-0005. Retrieve: Larger image (4,199k). Photographer's mark on reverse of photograph: |
