Wegener
DOCUMENTS

A collection of documents related to
Gottfried J. B. Wegener of Bremen, Germany,
Brooklyn, NY, and New Orleans, LA.

The Rev. Gottfried J. B. Wegener had a study on the first floor of the parsonage of St. Paul Lutheran Church. There he did everything related to serving a large congregation, including writing sermons, maintaining records, and documenting the church’s history. He also documented his family’s history, writing his autobiography in 1943.
After Wegener’s death in November 1946, the furnishings and everything else in the parsonage were distributed to family members, including the papers and documents in the study. Carl Wegener, the oldest child of the Wegener-Klein marriage, protected these materials for many years. Upon his death, they were given to Meta Wegener Hellmers and later to Norman Hellmers, who scanned the records. To give these documents long-term care, the original documents were donated to the Concordia Historical Institute in St. Louis. The scans are now online here.
