Marriage
to Anine Raun Upon the death of his second wife, Martine, Lauritz was left with a 6½-year-old stepdaughter, Ruby, to take care of. Anine Raun came to be his housekeeper, and eventually, his third wife. On 11 December 1909, Lauritz and Anine Petersen Raun were married in Council Bluffs (Pottawatomie County), Iowa, where her parents and her sister Marie were probably living. Anine Raun was born 1 April 1880 in Bisholt, Skjold sogn, Bjerre herred, Vejle amt, Denmark. An 1880 church record is believed to record her birth, based on the date and the names of the parents. However the record does not include any baptism information. The pastor may have missed completing the record, or perhaps she was baptized elsewhere. (An image of this birth record in Skjold—No. 4 in 1880—is available here.) |

Anine was
the youngest of nine children born to Niels Petersen Raun originally
of Bredmade in Nebsager sogn and Rasmine Katrine Hansen originally of Westerbye,
Klakring sogn. In the baptism record of one of his children, Niels is
listed as a “Husejer” (house owner). His occupation was Pumpemester
(a person who makes and repairs pumps). The 1880 census of Denmark includes the Raun family living in Vester (West) Bisholt in Skjold sogn (parish). The father, Niels Pedersen Ravn (Raun) was listed as the Husfader (Head of Household); his occupation was given as "Pumpmand." The census was taken 1 February 1880, before the birth of Anine. A png image of the original census can be seen here. A historical map of Bjerre herred shows the relationship of Anine's place of birth, Bisholt, with the birth places of her father Niels (Nebsager sogn) and her mother Rasmine (Klakring sogn). The map can be found here. Records in the Danish Emigration Archives show that Anine Petersen Ravn (the Danish spelling of Raun), born in Bisholt, registered to leave Denmark on 28 February 1907. In the emigration record, her occupation is listed as “Syerske” (seamstress). |

On 17 March 1907,
Anine arrived in New York City on the steamship Campania and
then entered the United States through Ellis Island. She indicated
that her final destination was Omaha, Nebraska. SS Campania Additional images of the Campania are here. |

Anine’s parents and all
eight of her brothers and sisters emigrated to America, although at
different times. A 1915 history of Audubon County, Iowa, lists all
of the family and says that in Denmark, the father Nels "had been engaged
in the manufacture of wooden pumps." |

On
15 May 1910, they had a daughter named Anna Sophie Christensen. (Anna
Sophie later changed her name to Anne Belle.) She was baptized at the
Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church on 16 June 1910. (On the same day,
Lauritz’s stepdaughter Ruby was baptized as "Ruby Martine Christensen.") Ruby continued to live with the Christensens after the birth of Anna (Anne), but she later went to live with an Uncle and Aunt in Turin (Monona County), Iowa. Ruby was never married and died on 18 February 1923, in Monona County, Iowa, and is buried there in Belvidere Cemetery. Go to next section: Later Life |
