Cunningham
Documents Researchers interested in the family of John Cunningham of South Carolina and Switzerland County, Indiana, will find these documents of interest. John Cunningham said he was born in 1795 in Abbeville District, South Carolina, near Vienna. He died in Switzerland County, Indiana in 1890. The documents include three pages from the John Cunningham family bible: births, marriages, and deaths. The owner of this Bible is not known at this time. Below are scans of photocopies of the three pages, along with transcriptions of the data.

Notes: It
appears that John Cunningham entered all of the births of his children
in the Bible on the date given at the bottom of the births page,
January 3, 1859. The fact
that all of the births are in the same, consistent handwriting shows
this
as well. Two of the births are too close in time (Solomon, born 25 Oct
1827
and William, born 26 Jan 1828) to be accurate. This discrepancy is yet
to
be explained. The record of the marriage of John Cunningham to his
first
wife and her death also appear to be written at the same time. The
death
of his second wife, Phoebe Loree O'Brien Cunningham, appears to have
been
written contemporaneously with her death. It appears that his death
record
was inserted by someone at a later date. His death date is given as
"Mar
25 (?) 1889." This does not agree with the civil death record, which
gives
the date of death as 12 Mar 1890. |
Interview of John Cunningham (O-INT-0001)
Also of interest to Cunningham researchers is a
three-page family history, the first two pages of which were apparently
written in 1889 by James J. Cunningham, the youngest son of John
Cunningham. It is not clear who wrote the third page. |

Cunningham (or Melville) Cemetery near Fairview, Indiana
Many members of the
Cunnungham family were buried in the Cunningham (or Melville) Cemetery,
located on property owned by the family for many years. A report on
this cemetery (including a
map and photographs of most tombstones) was prepared by Norm and Pat
Hellmers. There is a report and four appendixes that can be downloaded
here:Report (PDF file) Appendix A (PDF file) Appendix B (PDF file) Appendix C (PDF file) Appendix D (PDF file) Note: This report and the photographs were made in 1985. Since then, the cemetery has been cleaned up and fenced in. Some tombstones, previously flat with the ground, have been placed in an upright position. Any questions about these records can be forwarded to Norman Hellmers: norm.hellmers @ gmail.com |
