History of the Diaries
Nellie Irene (Bates) Thomas was born in 1861 and died in 1948. During
at least part of her life she kept a daily diary of her activities.
These diaries were later saved by family members and eventually ended
up in the hands of a great-granddaughter, Karen (Read) Wolfson. Karen’s
cousin, also a great-granddaughter, Patricia (O’Brien) Hellmers,
visited Karen in February 2008. Patricia offered to take the diaries
and transcribe them. The years represented are: 1912 (part of December
through part of August 1913), 1920, and 1922-1932.The diaries were transcribed as closely as possible to the original way that Nellie wrote the entries. Therefore, misspellings, abbreviations, shortened words or names, etc. were not corrected, but left the way they were written. Therefore, this document should not be “spell-checked” or any changes made without referring to the actual diary. Although much of the dairies are fairly readable, there are many words and names that could not be read precisely and there are many that were probably transcribed incorrectly. Where the entry was not clear, a question mark or underline was generally used in the transcription.
